Welcome to 2010

Happy New Year!

As an aside, 2010 is the bicentennial of the birth of Asa Gray, the American botanist & devout Christian who supported Darwin, and Edward Blyth, the English zoologist who developed a negative formulation of natural selection similar to that previously held by such thinkers as Empedocles and William Paley. Creationists often claim that Blyth was a creationist who was plagiarized by Darwin – there is little historical evidence for this – but fail to note that Blyth gave up his creationism and became a supporter of Darwin’s ideas.

I may post something more substantial on both of these figures as the year passes.
